Generally speaking, drop down menus become tedious for respondents when there are too many (more thant 10?) items to choose from. Most of the time you can fix this problem with a text input box and some validation logic.

Survey Design Tip: Asking for Age & Drop Down Menus
Vovici says we should get rid of drop-down menus and age ranges, and collect only the respondent's year of birth in a text box. I agree.

Thanks for the links. I love the positioning of your blog!
Regarding dropdowns, I actually would state it this way:
- Use a drop down when the choice list is well known (e.g., states, provinces, countries)
- Avoid a drop down when the respondent needs to read the choices (e.g., titles, industries)
- Avoid a drop down for lists of numbers (including years, of course)
Make sense?

Makes sense to me. If I can build on what you're saying, the decision to use a drop down should be made by asking yourself "is this going to enhance the user experience?" not "what's the easiest/fastest/most mass-producible way to program this survey?"
Thanks for reading.
